Humidity control

Crawl Space Dehumidifier Solutions in Virginia

Sealing a crawl space removes the moisture sources. A dehumidifier is what holds the space at a stable humidity once it is sealed.

Why humidity control matters in Virginia

Virginia summers are humid from the coast to the Blue Ridge. Even after the ground is covered and water is drained away, a crawl space can hold enough moisture in the air to keep wood damp, especially in July and August.

Wood moisture content tracks the humidity around it. Keeping the crawl space air in a controlled range is what keeps framing dry, and it is measurable — a hygrometer in the crawl space tells you more than a visual check.

Sizing and placement

A dehumidifier is sized to the volume of the crawl space and the moisture load it has to remove, not to a square-foot rule of thumb. Undersized units run constantly and never reach setpoint; oversized units short cycle.

Placement matters too: the unit is set on a raised, level platform, positioned so air circulates through the space rather than recirculating in one corner.

Condensate drainage

Every dehumidifier produces water. That condensate is piped to a drain, a sump basin, or a condensate pump — never left to discharge onto the liner. A dehumidifier draining onto the ground is a moisture problem wearing a solution's uniform.

Maintenance

  • Clean or replace the filter on the manufacturer's schedule
  • Confirm the condensate line stays clear
  • Check the humidity reading seasonally rather than assuming
  • Have coils cleaned periodically in dusty crawl spaces
